We know nutrition and physical activity are important for overall health, but we shouldn’t forget to
exercise our brains! To prevent memory loss or decline in cognition, we should be exercising our minds. This can be found through many methods including brain games, learning new things, reading, giving our eyes a break from mindless entertainment, or letting our minds relax through meditation or yoga. Brain fitness can help your brain function more efficiently, more effectively, and help resist disease. Whether you want to increase brain plasticity, or just improve overall wellness, here is a simple list of things you can do to exercise your brain.

Play games that challenge your mind:

            There are many games and puzzles that can challenge your mind. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, strategy board games, and other similar games make you think. They are a fun way to get your brain working in a different way.

Learn something new:

            Maybe it’s time to learn a new language or play a musical instrument. Not only does this work the brains memory function, but it requires attentive listening and translation of either words or notes. Music can also improve fine movement, control, and rhythm.

Use your hands:

            Doing hands-on activities like crocheting, knitting, or anything with a ball can help with sensory guided activities. These types of activities improve the brains tactile hand-eye coordination and fine motor control processing. Additionally, using your hands can help with the part of the brain involved in attention and alertness as well.

Eat Brain Food

            Dark chocolate is a good brain food because it increases dopamine levels. Other foods that are high in antioxidants like red wine and berries are also good because they fight free radicals. In addition, healthy fats found in walnuts, eggs, avocados, and fatty fish are really good for brain function, while saturated fat is not as good. Basically, if it’s high in preservatives, sugar, salt, or alcohol, it’s not doing your brain very many favors.
