How many hours of the day do you spend looking at your phone or computer not doing anything productive? How many hours of television (or should we say Netflix) do you watch per day? Maybe your children can’t seem to look up from their cell phones. Regardless, we live in a world that is full of technology and distractions that keep us from real life communication and productivity. Imagine all the work you could get done, all the new things you could learn, or relationships you could strengthen if you spent a little less time with technology. There are a bunch of different ways you can bond with your family with even just an hour of digital detox. Here are a couple of ideas:
Play a Game: Board games are a lot of fun to play with the family. You could also learn a couple of card games. Games which use teams, such as the game of pitch, are a good excuse to step away from the screens for a little while to have fun and be competitive.
Go for a Walk: Just getting outside of the house can be nice. Plus, you get some exercise. You could also play a sport with your friends and/or family.
Encourage Creativity: If you have small children this may be easier. Simply playing pretend, building a fort, or doing arts and crafts is a lot of fun. You could also make home videos or have a dance party. Activities like these are fun and they require the kids to use their imagination.
Cook Something Together: Teaching kids how to cook is not only fun but it can help them learn about measurements. It also gets their hands dirty and gives them a chance to help mom or dad.
Read: In general, it is a good idea to try to encourage a little reading every night. It helps increases reading and comprehension skills, makes you think, and gets you away from the screens. For some people reading takes them into a whole different world.
Go on a Picnic: Picnics are fun way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.. Plus, you can extend the outdoor adventure by camping in the backyard, exploring a lake, taking a hike, or hanging out around a fire pit.
